PNP may form quick reaction teams vs school shootings
MANILA, Philippines — In the wake of recent shooting incidents in schools, the government is eyeing the establishment of police quick reaction forces that will respond to incidents of violence on campuses.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla and Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez are studying the formation of specialized police teams that could be deployed immediately in the event of shootings in learning institutions.
Nartatez, for his part, said they are backing proposed legislation by Sen. Bam Aquino seeking to establish a sustained and coordinated approach to protecting students from threats and emergencies in school campuses.
Aquino has filed Senate Bill 2426, or the Comprehensive School Safety Act, which would establish a nationwide system for school safety.
Nartatez said they are ready to work with the Department of Education to ensure that schools remain safe spaces for students, faculty and school employees.
