MANILA, Philippines —  The President of the Republic yesterday gushed over the Philippines’ newest source of pride during what he joked was a reception “invented” so he could have a photo opportunity with his idol.

President Marcos grinned from ear to ear as he welcomed tennis icon Alex Eala at Malacañang to recognize her feat as the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships, or any grand slam.?

Marcos could not hide his excitement when he praised Eala for making Filipinos proud and for reminding them that they belong to a “great race.”?

“I’m a fan, so I’m gushing. OK, I’m sorry. I’m a real fan of yours. And one day, I hope I will get the opportunity to watch you even if it’s not a Grand Slam. Even if it’s a tournament,” Marcos said.

The President described Eala as a “true fighter” and a “true champion” and praised her for being proud of her race.?“The entire Filipino nation is behind you. The entire Filipino nation has come to love you because of your sweetness and grace.”

Eala thanked Marcos for the recognition.

“I am very proud to be a Filipino. I carry the flag with me wherever I go,” the tennis superstar said.  ?“I do my best to represent the best of our country on and off the court. Because I’m really proud and it comes from a genuine place of love,” she added.

Marcos presented a presidential citation to Eala, who then gifted the President and First Lady Liza Marcos with caps and signed tennis balls.
