MANILA, Philippines — Pumanaw na ang kilalang bilyunaryo na si John Gokongwei Jr. sa edad na 93.
“Our beloved husband, father and grandfather John Gokongwei, Jr. passed away peacefully 11:41 pm, November 9th at the Manila Doctor’s Hospital surrounded by his loved ones,” pahayag ng anak na si Lance Gokongwei.
Pangatlo siya sa listahan ng Forbes sa mga pinakamayamang Pilipino nitong 2019 na may net worth na umaabot sa $5.8 bilyon.
Siya ang founder ng JG Summit na merong mga interest sa air transportation, telecommunications, banking, food, power, at property.
Isa sa pinakamalaking food and beverage company sa bansa ang Universal Robina Corp. na sinimulan niya noong 1957 bilang isang cornstarch plant.
Samantala, nagpaabot ng pakikiramay ang Malacañang sa pamilya ni Gokongwei.
Sa isang statement, sinabi ni Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo na isa si Gokongwei sa mga leading Taipans at haligi ng ekonomiya ng Pilipinas.
“Our people recognize [his] amazing journey as a self-made industrialist, respected business leader, and generous philanthropist. A grateful nation respects the man for the indelible legacy he made in the fields of business, entrepreneurship and philanthropy,” ani Panelo.
