90 years hatol sa ex-DECS official

MANILA, Philippines - Sa kulungan na magbubuwis ng kanyang huling mga araw ang isang dating mataas na opisyal ng noo’y Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) matapos mapatunayang guilty sa limang counts ng malversation sa maanomalyang paglustay sa P6,554,500.00 pondo ng Fund for Assistance to Private Education (FAPE) mula 1994 hanggang 1995.

Bukod sa kulong, pinagmumulta din ng graft court ang akusadong si Adriano Arcelo, dating Undersecretary for Finance ng noo’y DECS at kasalukuyang Presidente ng FAPE ng halagang P6,554,500 bilang civil liability.

Kapwa akusado ni Arcelo sa multiple counts ng kasong graft at malversation sina FAPE Vice President Roberto Borromeo, Investment Director Rosa Anna Duavit at Program Officer Corazon Nera.

Pinatunayan sa korte ng Ombudsman prosecutors na mula 1994-1995, si Arcelo ay nagkaroon ng personal loans mula sa FAPE funds na may kabuuang P6,554,500.

Nadiskubre din ng Ombudsman na si Arcelo at iba pang akusado ay naglaan ng P50 million loan sa John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation, isang educational institution na pinangangasiwaan ng asawa ni Arcelo. Ang multi milyong loan ay nakuha sa tulong nina Borromeo, Duavit and Nera.

“Instead of private educational institutions, the one who benefits is a FAPE officer tasked to ensure that the funds are managed in a prudent and judicious manner,” ayon sa graft  court.
