PB holds session in pure Cebuano
CEBU, Philippines - Yesterday’s session at the Cebu Provincial Board may have been the most awkward and entertaining so far.
This, as the board members used Cebuano in their discussions instead of the usual English, the first and only time of the year the native language was used as prescribed under a provincial ordinance.
The ordinance mandates the PB and other local government units within Cebu province to hold a session in Cebuano in the last week of February of every year.
The PB conducted yesterday its last session for this month, instead of February 27, because the members will be attending the National Assembly of the Provincial Board Members League of the Philippines (PBLMP) in Manila.
The PB started its session with the signing of National Anthem in Cebuano.
The crowd inside the session hall burst into laughter after Board Member Christopher Baricuatro addressed Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, presiding officer of the PB, as “Madam lingkuran (chair)” instead of “tagsiya” or chairperson/chairwoman.
“Akong sponsoran ang komitiba report ni halangdun bukal Miguel Antonio Magpale. Ika-kinse. Ika-labing lima. Ika- napulo?g lima madam lingkuranan. Madam silya. Aw madam tagsiya. Mangayo ko og pasaylo, “Baricuatro said while standing on a podium
The vice governor said speaking Cebuano language in PB’s session is a way of promoting, preserving, and protecting the diversity of Cebuano language and culture. (FREEMAN)
