Fire destroys 60 homes in Parañaque

MANILA, Philippines - A two-hour fire destroyed 60 houses in Sitio Bagong Pagasa in Barangay Sun Valley, Parañaque City shortly before midnight Tuesday, an official said yesterday.

The fire broke out at around 10 p.m. and reached fifth alarm. Firefighters had difficulty putting out the blaze due to the narrow streets, Superintendent Rene Capuz, city fire marshal, told The STAR.

“The affected area is a community of informal settlers,” he said.

Initial investigation showed the fire started from a candle left unattended in the house of Dondong Masangcay, Capuz said.

Property damage was estimated at P1.5 million.
