The fire alarm reached "Task Force Alpha," a level higher than the fifth alarm, the student publication said.
UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan said in a text message to Philstar.com that the fire was declared under control but "the damage is extensive."
According to a report from the Philippine Collegian, the official student publication of UP Diliman, Tan said that the fire did not reach parts of the building's first floor.
However, the whole FC will be off limits once fire is put out as floors might collapse.
All classes at the College of Arts and Letters building were suspended due to the fire that razed the FC.
