MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines is hosting the 34th Asean Senior Amateur Golf Championships for the seventh time on Oct. 18-20 at Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in General Trias, Cavite.

Over 300 delegates from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and host Philippines are expected to pit skills in the annual competition organized by the Federation of Philippine Senior Amateur Golfers, Inc. and the Province of Cavite.

FPASGI president Melito Salazar Jr. said bringing the regional event to Phl is timely considering the country chairs the Asean this year.

“When Malaysia declined, I accepted on behalf of the board because I know this year is the 50th anniversary of Asean and that the Philippines is the chair,” Salazar said during Friday’s launch at Villamor Air Base Golf Club.

“President Duterte is chairing the Asean and the support we can give to him and the Philippines by hosting this affair is I think very sufficient,” he added.

Phl also staged the event in 1987, 1991, 1995, 2000, 2006 and 2011.

Salazar said they want to showcase the famous Filipino hospitality and make foreign contingent bring the pleasant experience back home and long to return to the country.

Meanwhile, Team Philippines expects to be at its best on home turf.

“Kung sa abroad nananalo tayo, dito pa (We’re winning abroad so there are better chances of winning here),” said team captain Vidal Querol to a wide applause. “We’ll do our best. Rest assured we’ll be ready. Number One.”

Last year in Brunei, Eddie Bagtas and Ricardo Loyola went away with best gross (individual) and best net (individual), respectively, while the Phl contingent earned the team gross. Host Brunei took the team net accolade while Bruneian Patrick Lau netted the best Stableford score.

“In choosing the team, we always get the best players. In previous tournaments, some of our good players can’t go abroad but now  we can really have our best players. So the fact that it’s here, I think that’s an advantage,” said Salazar.
