Tabuena falls by 1 in Taiwan, earns P4.6M
MANILA, Philippines – Miguel Tabuena birdied No. 15 for the second straight time to card a 70 but lost by one to local ace Lu Wei-chi in a thrilling finish in the Mercuries Taiwan Masters at the Taiwan Golf and Country Club yesterday.
The young Filipino grabbed a share of the lead midway through the final round at four-under overall on back-to-back birdie feats from No. 6. But he stumbled with a bogey for the second straight day on the tough par-3 10th and needed to birdie the 15th to save a third 70 in four days and snatch runner-up honors at 284.
He missed nailing his second Asian Tour crown after ruling the Philippine Open at Luisita last year but pocketed the runner-up prize of $96,000 (P4.6 million).
Lu actually came to the last hole with a two-shot lead over Tabuena but holed out with a bogey for a 70 and a 283. Thai Phachara Khongwatmai also turned in a 70 for joint third with compatriot Danthai Boonma, who carded a 71, at 285.
Tony Lascuña hobbled with a 73 and wound up tied for 23rd at 295 while Jobim Carlos limped with a 78 for a share of 47th at 306.
