ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – A policewoman was gunned down in a remote village in this city on Monday afternoon.

Police Officer 1 Peggy Lynne Villamin-Vargas, 40, of the Zamboanga City police Station 1 and her two companions were  standing in front of an eatery in Sitio Mialim, Barangay Vitali when motorcycle-riding men fired at her.

Vargas was among the police officers awarded with medals by former interior secretary Senen Sarmiento for their campaign against illegal drugs.

A former Quezon City police officer, she was reassigned to Western Mindanao either due to threats related to the anti-drugs campaign or for alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade.

She was declared dead on arrival at a clinic.

An investigation is underway.
