DOLE to assist firecracker traders in case of ban
MANILA, Philippines – Livelihood assistance will be provided to firecracker manufacturers if the government imposes a total ban on the industry, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said yesterday.
Labor Undersecretary Joel Maglunsod said the firecracker industry must be thoroughly assessed so the government can provide the needed intervention for affected manufacturers and workers.
“There will be people who will be affected if firecracker use would be regulated, but DOLE can provide assistance,” Maglunsod said.
President Duterte earlier said he would discuss the matter with Cabinet officials and let them decide whether to impose a total firecracker ban.
Maglunsod said DOLE could provide livelihood assistance or facilitate new employment for the affected workers.
DOLE had initiated a study on the possible impact on employment of the firecracker ban.
Based on the initial assessment, DOLE said a firecracker ban is unlikely to cause a mass displacement of workers.
The Department of Health has been pushing for the ban to reduce the number of firecracker-related deaths and injuries, particularly during the New Year revelry.
