Low-pressure area seen to bring floods, landslides in Davao

MANILA, Philippines —  The state weather bureau yesterday warned residents in Davao region to be vigilant against flooding and landslides due to a trough or extension of a low-pressure area over the Pacific Ocean.

The weather system was forecast to bring moderate to at times heavy rains over the region until today, according to Meno Mendoza of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

“The low-pressure was not expected to intensify into a tropical cyclone in the next few days,” Mendoza said.

The weather is expected to improve tomorrow, he added. 

Last week, Tropical Storm Basyang brought heavy rains over parts of the Visayas and Mindanao as well as in Palawan, triggering flashfloods and landslides.

The storm, which weakened into a low-pressure area before exiting the Philippine area of responsibility, left 15 persons dead.

PAGASA said none or one cyclone normally enters the Philippines during February.

Meanwhile, fair weather condition will prevail in most parts of the country until mid-week.

Meno said the northeast monsoon would bring cloudy skies with scattered rains over extreme Northern Luzon until today.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms.
