ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — The military recovered 24 high-powered firearms as it settled rido or a clan war in Lanao del Sur on Monday.

The families of Vice Mayor Jafar Dipatuan of Bacolod-Kalawi town and Mayor Al Fatah Pacalna Balindong of Tugaya signed a peace covenant at Camp Ranao in Marawi, Maj. Ronald Suscano, First Infantry Division spokesman, said yesterday.

Local and police officials of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and Lanao del Sur as well as Col. Generoso Ponio of the 103rd Brigade witnessed the signing of the peace covenant.

Suscano said the feuding clans surrendered two caliber .50 Barrett,  six M14 and seven M16 rifles, four M203 and three M79 grenade launchers, a caliber .30 rifle and a Browning automatic rifle.

Lanao del Sur Vice Gov. Mamintal Adiong Jr., ARMM Vice Gov. Haroun Al-Rashid Lucman and Ponio were among those who helped reconcile the two families.

Members and supporters of both clans have figured in gunfights in the past five decades.

Four followers of the Dipatuan clan were wounded and more than 200 families were displaced in a shooting in Bacolod Kalawi town last Jan. 5.
