ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Continuing military operations against the Abu Sayyaf in Sulu led to the surrender of eight militants on Saturday.

Brig. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of Joint Task Force Sulu (JTFS), said the eight, who used to be followers of slain Abu Sayyaf leader Alhabsy Misaya, surrendered to Lt. Col. Jessie Montoya, commanding officer of the 2nd Special Forces Battalion, in Talipao early Saturday morning.

The militants who surrendered were identified as Rakib Usman Mujakkil, Sadhikal Sabi Asnon, and Jarrain Elil of Omar town; Wahab Buklaw and Anggan Ali Sahaw of Pata Island; Bandi Ahadjula and Adih Manis Juhaini from Parang town; and Alden Banon of Talipao.

The youngest of the militants who surrendered is 25 years old and the oldest is 52.

The Abu Sayyaf militants turned over two M16 rifles, an M14 and five M1 Garands.

“Those who surrendered underwent medical checkup and custodial debriefing to determine important information that they may share which will guide us in our subsequent actions to bring genuine and lasting peace in the province of Sulu,” Sobejana said.

He added the military will continue to take in militants who want to turn themselves in to authorities.

He warned them, however, that the military will continue to hunt those who continue to stage terrorist attacks and kidnapping operations.

Sobejana lauded local leaders who have been helping convince the Abu Sayyaf to surrender.
