MANILA, Philippines - A soldier and a New People’s Army rebel were wounded as clashes between government troops and the NPA continue amid President Duterte’s cancellation of peace negotiations with the communists.

A certain Pfc. Antonio and rebel Arnold Jamias, 28, were wounded in an encounter in Sitio Landingan, Nagtipunan in Quirino on Wednesday.

An M16 rifle and a grenade were recovered from Jamias, the military said.

Rebels also clashed with soldiers in Palawan. There was no reported casualty from the government side, but the military said a number of rebels were believed wounded or killed.

Personnel of the 4th Marine Battalion Landing Team and 18th Special Forces Company clashed with the communist guerrillas at the boundary of Bataraza and Rizal towns. The gunfight  lasted for 40 minutes.

The Western Mindanao Command said pursuing troops overran a rebel camp in Sitio Kambingan, Barangay Mahilud.

Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent Rodolfo Castil, Negros Occidental police officer-in-charge, described the reported sighting of NPA rebels in the province as a “trap.”

Castil said rebels expose themselves to residents only to ambush responding policemen or soldiers. – Cecille Suerte Felipe, Raymund Catindig, Jaime Laude, Gilbert Bayoran
