NORTH COTABATO, Philippines — Lawmen shot dead five alleged members of a drug ring in an operation early Wednesday in Kabacan town in North Cotabato.

Superintendent Romeo Galgo, Jr., spokesman of the Police Regional Office-12, said a combined Army and police team was to peacefully arrest Kurin Acoy, a wanted large-scale drug peddler, in his hideout in Barangay Kayaga but he and his followers resisted, provoking a brief gunfight.

Acoy, most known in Kabacan and nearby towns as "Butterfly" and his four followers, whose identities probers are still trying to establish, were killed on the spot.

The operation that resulted in their deaths was carried out jointly by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, the North Cotabato police, agents from the Kabacan municipal police, and personnel of the Army’s 7th Infantry Battalion.

Galgo said the raiding team found besides the cadavers of the five men handguns and fragmentation grenades.

Galgo said local officials and barangay leaders helped the police and the PDEA-12 locate the hideout of Acoy and his slain henchmen.
