PNP imposes gun ban for Miss U

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has imposed a gun ban in Pasay and Parañaque as part of the security measures for the 65th Miss Universe coronation at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena at 8 a.m. today.

PNP chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa approved on Saturday night the suspension of permits to carry firearms outside of residence (PTCFORs) in the two cities.

National Capital Region Police Office chief Director Oscar Albayalde said only the 1,858 policemen, military and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel deployed for the event are allowed to carry firearms.

The gun ban took effect yesterday and will end at midnight tonight.

Albayalde said helicopters and drones are also prohibited from flying in the vicinity of the MOA Arena.

Dela Rosa approved the suspension of the PTCFOR and the no-fly zone for helicopters and drones to prevent criminals from taking advantage of the situation.

The PNP did not cut cell phone signals to prevent miscommunication between the pageant organizers and police.

A total of 150 personnel from the PCG, Philippine Navy and Maritime Group were tapped to secure Manila Bay during the pageant.

PCG spokesman Commander Armand Balillo said they would use 18 rubber boats to patrol the Manila Bay and areas near the MOA Arena, which were declared no-sail zones.
