Reelected Negros mayor dies

Danny B. Dangcalan - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – The reelected mayor of San Enrique, Negros Occidental has died.

Mario Magno, who was supposed to serve his second term, died of multiple organ failure at the Dr. Pablo Torre Memorial Hospital yesterday.  He was 64.

Magno’s brother Carlitos said the mayor had suffered from complications of a kidney transplant.

Vice Mayor Abner Jardinico will take over Magno’s post until June 30.

Former mayor Jilson Tubillara, who won as vice mayor, is expected to assume as mayor on July 1 under the rule of succession.

Prior to Magno’s death, a local court had ordered a manual recount of votes cast in the mayoral election in response to an electoral protest filed by Jardinico.

Magno garnered 7,906 votes against Jardinico’s 4,885.
