Cop exec slain; mayoral bet nabbed in shooting
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – A candidate for mayor in Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte and two others were arrested following a shooting incident on Wednesday night that left a police official dead.
Chief Superintendent Miguel Antonio Jr., Western Mindanao police director, identified the fatality as Senior Inspector Mirdan Usama, team leader of a platoon of the Regional Public Safety Battalion-9. Usama died while being treated at the Sibub County Hospital in Titay town.
Alson Chan, who is running under the Alliance of Parties for Progress and his two companions, who were not immediately identified, were arrested.
Probers said Usama led a group of policemen who responded to the reported presence of armed men in Barangay Camul when they were shot. The armed men turned out to be Chan and his companions.
The suspects yielded a baby armalite and six .45-caliber pistols.
