Bomb blast hits Lamitan

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - An improvised bomb exploded inside a vehicle Friday night in the downtown area of Lamitan City, Basilan province, according to police.

The police said no one was reported hurt from the explosion that occurred about 8:25 p.m. along Flores Street, Barangay Maligaya.

Senior Inspector Gean Gallardo, Lamitan City Police chief, said the improvised explosive device (IED) was placed inside a multicab that was parked in front of Evangelical Church.

Gallardo said the powerful explosion damaged the vehicle. Slight damages were also noted on nearby structures.

Gallardo said the Coast Guard K9 unit and police and military explosive ordnance and disposal (EOD) units immediately conducted post blast investigation to determine the type of bomb used in the attack.

The police chief said no group claimed responsibility in the explosion.
