It’s non-working holiday in Bulacan tomorrow
SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines – President Aquino declared Feb. 3, a Monday, as a special non-working holiday in Bulacan in observance of the 88th birth anniversary of former Senate President Blas Ople.
Proclamation No. 709, signed last Jan. 16, said Ople devoted his life to selfless, dedicated, and sincere service to the country and for Filipinos.
It said the Blas F. Ople Day would give Bulacan residents the opportunity to commemorate the life of the man who was instrumental in the framing of the Philippine Labor Code.
Ople was born on Feb. 3, 1927 in Hagonoy town. He served as Social Security commissioner in 1965 and Labor and Employment minister in 1967, both under the administration of former President Ferdinand Marcos.
He was elected assemblyman of the Interim Batasang Pambansa representing Central Luzon in 1978 and was appointed by former President Corazon Aquino as member of the 1986 Constitutional Commission that drafted the 1987 Constitution.
Ople was elected senator in 1992 and elected Senate President in 1999.
After his stint in Congress, he was appointed as Secretary of Foreign Affairs in 2002. He died on Dec. 14, 2003.
