Seaman killed in Quiapo robbery
MANILA, Philippines - Police have intensified their drive against riding-in-tandem motorists following the rob-slay of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in broad daylight Sunday in Quiapo, Manila by two men riding a motorcycle.
Seaman Alexander Maliwanag, 63, of Granate street in Quiapo, died on arrival at the Ospital ng Sampaloc of gunshot wounds in the body.
Police said the victim was buying a bottle of mineral water at a water refilling station along Bilibid Viejo street at around 8 a.m. when the robbers blocked him with their blue motorcycle, drew their guns and grabbed his gold bracelet.
When the suspects started to remove the victim’s other pieces of jewelry, Maliwanag started to resist, prompting one of the armed men to shoot him.
When the victim fell, the robbers boarded their motorcycle and sped towards the direction of C.M. Recto Avenue.
Witnesses failed to get a close look at the robbers since both were wearing full face helmets.
The incident was a repeat of the rob-slay of another seaman in Paco, Manila months ago.
