Lawmaker seeks speed limit along Batasan road
MANILA, Philippines — The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) should impose a speed limit along the “killer” Batasan-San Mateo Road in Batasan Hills, Quezon City, where five persons died in a truck accident last week, a lawmaker said yesterday.
At the same time, Quezon City Rep. Winston Castelo urged the Land Transportation Office to be stricter in testing the roadworthiness of vehicles before it registers them.
“Imposing a speed limit on the roadway and more attention devoted for checking roadworthiness of vehicles will boost safety of motorists,” Castelo, whose legislative district includes Batasan Hills, said.?He said strict implementation of road rules and concerned agencies efficiently doing their job would help prevent accidents.
He noted that the MMDA has set a 60 kilometer-per-hour speed limit for the nearby eight-lane Commonwealth Avenue.
He said a lower limit could be prescribed for the narrower downhill Batasan-San Mateo Road.
The Batasan part of the road is crowded with vehicles on most days, he said.
