Erap warns barangay execs involved in drugs
MANILA, Philippines – Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada yesterday warned barangay officials involved in the illegal drug trade that they would be dealt with accordingly.
In an interview after taking his oath before Court of Appeals Justice Andres Reyes Jr. at city hall, Estrada said barangay chairmen coddling drug pushers would face stiff sanctions.
Estrada said he ordered the 896 barangay leaders in the city to rid their areas of drug suspects.
Estrada said he would consult president-elect Rodrigo Duterte on his plan to restore the death penalty.
“May kalalagyan kayo. But I don’t have such an order yet. I will have to consult (incoming) president Duterte,” Estrada said.
The mayor said he supported Duterte’s peace and order campaign, especially against illegal drugs.
“He has not assumed office yet, but drug personalities have shown that they fear him,” Estrada said.
Asked by reporters if he would do a Duterte and order the killing of drug suspects if they resist arrest, Estrada replied, “Kung patay, e ‘di sementeryo sila pupulutin. They are lucky because the city government has free burial.”
Estrada vowed to implement more development programs for Manileños.
He said he was grateful to the people of Manila who voted for him.
