Woman killed by work rival’s live-in partner

Mae Clydyl L. Avila - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A woman was stabbed to death outside her home by the live-in partner of a former coworker who allegedly had a grudge against her.

The incident happened around 6:30 in the evening on Aranas Extension, Barangay Duljo Fatima Cebu City.

The victim, Yolanda Cataytay, 59, was at home when the suspect identified as Richie Caburnay, arrived and called for the victim to come out.

Caburnay confronted Cataytay about a job-related argument between her and his live-in partner, Angelita Mabitad, 41, of Barangay Duljo Fatima. He then allegedly pulled out the kitchen knife and stabbed Cataytay multiple times.

Cataytay was declared dead on arrival at the Cebu City Medical Center.

During the incident, the only family members at home with Cataytay were her husband, Ignacio, her grandchild, and her son’s live-in partner, Maria Theresa Justiniane.

Justiniane, 24, narrated to The FREEMAN that Ignacio was allegedly drunk that night and was not in a proper state to defend his wife.

Both Cataytay and Mabitad worked as all-around helpers for teachers at the nearby San Nicolas Elementary School before the latter was forced to quit her job last month due allegedly to her bad working attitude. Justiniane said that Mabitad had been jealous of Cataytay since then.

She also stated that the suspect, Caburnay, is also known in the area to have a terrible temper and had also been made to resign from his security guard post at the same school where Mabitad and Cataytay worked.

Elements of Cebu City Police Office Homicide Section led by Police Officer 3 Jose Alegado went on hot pursuit for the suspect, but Caburnay eluded arrest.

Police investigations are still ongoing. (FREEMAN)
