Radaza to MECO: Hire barge for Olango

Christell Fatima M. Tudtud - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza has advised Mactan Electric Company (MECO) to rent a barge to transport its materials to Olango Island after she observed that the firm got negative feedback from her constituents.

Radaza said residents of the island have been complaining about the alternate services of the utility firm, particularly in sending replacement generators to the island.

"Reklamo sa taga-isla nga ngano every December man gyud matumong? Is this overused from January to November, ug December naguba na gyud dayon?," said Radaza, who already called the utility firm's attention November last year.

Radaza added that there was also a time that the island experienced wide power outage and the residents had a difficult time adjusting to the loss of electricity.

The utility company has reportedly reached out to the city government and revealed the problem on the transport of its generators as barges were not available at that time.

But Radaza said the company should look for other solutions to improve its services.

According to Radaza, the city's other contractors are renting barges to carry out their materials and services, adding that she believed MECO can do the same thing.

"Niingon ko nila nga kung wala'y barge, eh 'di, magpakyaw sila og barge kay inyo man na'ng serbisyo ang kuryente didto," she added.

When asked about whether she is open to getting another power utility provider, Radaza said that it was an idea to consider, but the city government will probably start with putting pressure on the existing provider.

"I don't know kungmaabot ba ta sa punto nga we will be suggesting nga duna'y laing mo-serve nga lain nga dedicated for Olango. Gusto gani nato ipalambo ang atong Olango, da murag mura man gani nibalik sa dili mao kay wana'y suga," she said.

Following this concern, the mayor instructed the city attorney to prepare a letter addressed to MECO to clarify its services.

"Mas maayo lang gyud ni nga we put it in black and white og unsa gyud ilahang services," Radaza said. (FREEMAN)
