The uncorrected street names of Cebu (Part 2)

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

It is not only in Cebu City where some street signs bear the old/uncorrected name, an example is Plaridel Street. The Mandaue City Council on August 3, 2011 enacted City Ordinance No. 12-2011 642 renaming Plaridel Street (alias of Gregorio del Pilar) to Mayor Demetrio M. Cortes Avenue. Demetrio is the "Father of Mandaue City." It was approved during the term of Mayor Jonas Cortes who for ethical reasons did not sign for its approval, but was approved by operation of law on September 6, 2011.

As usually is the case for the family of the honorees, the Cortes Clan for example would not on its own insist that the correction be made, CEBUpedia wrote an article on this appeal on August 12, 2013, the city council, the traffic and engineering departments should have taken the clue and heeded the call to ensure that the street sign be finally corrected. I hope the Quisumbing administration would answer the call. In Cebu City, the Aboitiz Clan whose foundation (RAFI) building office built 23 years ago stands on the street where its member has been honored, did not ask or lobbied for its correction and patiently waited for 30 years.

In Talisay City, although the street marker was eventually corrected, Capitan Polong Deiparine named in honor of Capitan Olimpio "Polong" Deiparine, the old street name, Uldog is still being used by its residents and business establishments located along the street.

Take for example the various business establishments along Gen. Arcadio M. Maxilom Avenue with huge billboards with its old street name: Mango Avenue. Such also is the case along Pres. Sergio Osmeña Boulevard, address of the business establishments still bears "Mango Avenue." Along the Serging Osmeña Boulevard there are establishments that still carry the old street name "Gen. MacArthur," this should be corrected to avoid confusion because there is actually a street in North Reclamation Area bearing the name of Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

CEBUpedia wrote an article years ago respectfully suggesting to the city governments on what to do to ensure that street naming be followed:

1.) The Office of the Mayor will not renew/approve a mayor/business permit with an incorrect business address, it should require the business establishment to carry the correct street name in its billboards, stationeries, call cards and other advertisement signs/medium.

2.) The city government will furnish to the PHILPOST/Public Utilities, MCWD, PLDT, Globe, VECO the correct street names and the latter should not deliver incorrect mailing address and be part of the advocacy of educating its clients to put the correct street names.
