Can PNoy guarantee peace in Mindanao?

SHOOTING STRAIGHT - Bobit S. Avila - The Freeman

It’s our first talk show since we celebrated our 15th anniversary on Straight from the Sky last week where we completed 785 shows. Today we start our new season not with a full-blown talk show since it is the start of the Holy Week. But we are truly blessed that we have tonight a very special person who flew all the way from Manila on a journey of the Pope’s Kantor. Our special guest is Mr. Nonon Baang, a baritone who hails from Pagadian City.

Somehow he found his way to learn music from the Music Conservatory of the University of Sto. Tomas and he now has a music school. Actually this is the second time Nonon has appeared in our show after appearing in “Sistema Pilipino” for our Christmas presentation in December 2013. But Nonon has moved forward as he found himself as the lead cantor during the visit of Pope Francis last January, where a full-blown choir sang at the Manila Metropolitan Cathedral when Pope Francis said the Mass with 2,000 Filipino clergymen.

Since that event was not opened to the public, we only show a few TV footages of that event at the Cathedral. So for this special Holy Week presentation, we bring you The Pope’s Kantor, Nonon Baang showing in SkyCable’s channel 61 at 8:00PM with replays on Wednesday and Saturday. We also have replays on MyTV channel 30 at 9:00 tonight and at 7:00AM and 9:00PM on Wednesday and Friday.

Last Thursday, the President spoke before 247 graduates of the Philippine National Police Academy  in Silang, Cavite where he (as expected) did not offer any apology for the Mamasapano massacre but instead made an appeal for understanding.

This was the fourth time the President spoke publicly about this incident and despite the Filipino people’s waiting for an apology we got none! What the President said was, “I swear I’m telling the truth.” Wow! How can he say and even swear that he was telling the truth when the news media has already exposed to the public who wasn’t telling the truth about the Mamasapano incident?

For instance, early when the news broke out about this incident, Malacañang denied the involvement of Americans in Oplan Exodus. But a couple of weeks later when this was exposed to the public, Malacañang said there was nothing wrong with Americans helping us in the fight against terrorism. Come on, Mr. President.

Pundits say this was to be the President’s last statement on the Mamasapano incident, hoping against hope that the Filipino people would no longer question him on this issue. Alas, he makes an appeal for understanding without any apology. Come now, how can we understand this President when he is full of hubris and hypocrisy?

At the very least, an apology was expected from him who cries the slogan of “Daang Matuwid” or the Straight Path. But alas for the President, his popularity went crumbling down, despite the efforts by Pulse Asia to prop him up saying that his ratings were down 34%. Truth is… the President’s popularity has plunged further down the river!

In their attempt to put the final nail to the coffin of the Mamasapano massacre, Pres. Aquino’s allies in Congress have decided not to invite the President on the hearings on April 7 & 8th. According to House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, Jr. “We made it clear that the President will not be invited, that he has already made a sufficient explanation of his role in Mamasapano.” What can we say? Whatever the President said is sufficient for his political allies. This shows how far detached is our political establishment from reality! But our people are like zombies unaware of what’s happening!

Now this President is proposing a sort of Council of Elders to push for the Bangsamoro Basic Law. Why is he doing this? By what law allows him to literally usurp the powers of Congress, who is the sole authority for making laws in this country. Could it be the President’s way of shifting the focus from the Mamasapano incident and to pre-empt those in Congress who are no longer supporting the BBL?

While the President insists that giving the Moro Islamic Liberation Front the BBL would bring peace to Mindanao. If we do not pass the BBL, there will be more body bags. But this President has lost all his credibility. Even people of lesser education and especially those living in Mindanao reject the BBL simply because the Moro National Liberation Front, which originally signed the Tripoli Agreement, is out of the equation. If we demand that PNoy guarantee peace in Mindanao, I doubt if he would do so.
