What we have here is obstruction of justice

SHOOTING STRAIGHT - Bobit S. Avila - The Freeman

There is no doubt that traffic is already bad in our major thoroughfares, but now even smaller streets are getting clogged with vehicles that are double parking because people do not have any garages and worse, many old houses have been turned into restaurants. Go to Jasmin St. and Orchid St. and there are at least five restaurants in that vicinity and I dare challenge Mayor Michael Rama to either impose parking areas for that place or use CITOM to impose a single parking in that area.

Perhaps the Cebu City Council ought to revisit its ordinance on the conversion of houses into restaurants, which I heard is even stricter than the National Building Code.    It is time to be very strict on these people who turn their homes into restaurants and not give them any building or business permits if they cannot produce a space for passenger's vehicle parking.

I did not know that the Department of Interior and Local Government has been investigating Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama for reasons we still have to find out until I read it in The Freeman's editorial yesterday. Could it be because Mayor Rama was honest enough to say that he did not support the call of support for beleaguered Pres. Benigno "PNoy" Aquino III by the League of Cities and Municipalities? First of all, Mayor Mike told me that he was never consulted by the bigwigs of the League which only means that this call for support is faulty at best.

I fully concur with The Freeman editorial that the DILG, which is headed by DILG Sec. Manuel "Mar" Roxas II should treat this case very carefully otherwise it could be the trigger that could usher the collapse of the Aquino regime which is now clutching on straws. Even Aquino ally, Sen. Serge Osmeña has called upon Pres. PNoy to apologize to the Filipino for the tragic incident that led to the Mamasapano massacre of the 44 fallen Special Action Force troopers.

Somehow, the anger of the Filipino people has not dissipated even a month after the Mamasapano debacle. This is due to the fact that the Legislative Branch of the government, which is safely inside the pockets of Pres. PNoy has managed to use their congressional investigation not to ferret out the truth, but rather to sanitize the role of the President and pin the blame squarely on suspended and eventually resigned Philippine National Police chief Alan Purisima and sacked SAF chief Getulio Napeñas. Indeed this brazen cover-up is worse than the massacre of the SAF troopers as it is called "obstruction of justice."

Last week, thousands of students from the various universities and colleges in Metro Manila staged a protest rally demanding for the resignation of Pres. PNoy. Mind you, this was only a couple of days after the 29th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, which many pundits say it was the smallest crowd that ever attended the EDSA rites.

What a pity for the Aquino family; 29-years ago, the Filipino people trooped to EDSA to remove the conjugal Marcos dictatorship and install Cory Aquino as president. But decades later, the Filipino has been disillusioned because there were no real reforms that were implemented to improve their lot. Poverty and injustice is just as bad as during the time of the conjugal Marcos dictatorship. Even the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law exempted the Aquino family's Hacienda Luisita, which is why people no longer troop to the EDSA rites.

If you recall, last year, Pres. PNoy held the EDSA rites at the steps of the Cebu Provincial Capitol, which was the wrong place to do this because we in Cebu held a protest rally against Marcos with Tita Cory and Salvador "Doy" Laurel at the Fuente Osmeña. In fact my good friend, photographer Fred Umabong finally posted those black and white photos of the Cebu EDSA event in his Facebook last week. Those photos are like a rare gem!

So the 29th EDSA People Power celebration last week at the EDSA Shrine was - as they say - the least attended of all the EDSA rites; that there were more policemen than people. Let me say it further that the few people who trooped to the EDSA Shrine were now demanding for the resignation of Pres. PNoy Aquino. What an irony! If you ask me, the downfall of Pres. PNoy Aquino can be viewed as the handwriting that is now on the wall. It is now a matter of when.

The latest news I got came from a text from a friend who said, "PNPA Alumni Association will hold a nationwide march on Sunday at the end of the traditional 40-day mourning for the fallen 44. This will start in Dasmariñas, Cavite to Quezon Memorial Circle via Camp Crame and it will be participated by the PNPA Alumni and the families of the Fallen 44." Need I say more?
