CEBU, Philippines — Cebu fitness buffs get a chance to join a one of a kind running event in the Cebu leg of the Heroes Run slated on November 26 at the Camp Lapu-Lapu in Barangay Apas, Cebu City.

More than the competition, Col. Medel Aguilar, assistant chief of the unified staff for civil military operation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines-CentCom, said that they want the runners to experience what soldiers undergo during their trainings.

The race features 3.2-kilometer distance divided into three categories including 2-mile run, 2-mile run plus and the squad run.

In the 2-mile run, the runner shall take the 'heroes path' around the camp where military chants played by loudspeakers shall be heard and passing through a 'combat zone' where 'ambuscades' are expected from 'enemies of the state' armed with water cannons and colored powder.

The 2-mile run plus, on the other hand, takes the same path but with 'obstacle courses,'  while the squad run is composed of 10 members trying to finish obstacle course before reaching the finish line.

"What we want to accomplish in this run is that we can share our experiences in training to the participants," said Aguilar in a press conference yesterday at the Active Zone in Ayala Center Cebu.

The organizers are targeting close to 1,000 runners to join the race, which is also a fundraising event for the benefit of the Heroes Foundation Incorporated, a non-government organization that gives supports to AFP’s Educational Benefit System Office.

Registration fee is pegged at P300 in the 2-mile run for the official race shirt and P500 for those who want the limited edition shirt, while P500 (official shirt) and P600 (limited edition) for the 2-mile plus run and P5,000 per group for the squad run.

A specially-designed finisher’s dog tag awaits all the finishers.  One may register at the New Balance Experience Store in the Active Zone or visit online at race.ph. — (FREEMAN)
