Team 9 (HQS) rules CPPO chessfest

CEBU, Philippines — Team 9 led by SPO4 Ruel Hortelano ruled the 2017 Cebu City Police Office  (CCPO) Chess Tournament over the weekend at the Knight Attack Chess Cafe in Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

Representing the CCPO Headquarters, Hortelano, an officer of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA), is joined by SPO4 Antonio Barade, PO1 Alexander Zapanta and PO2 Elmer Mosqueda in pocketing the P5,000 champion's purse.

Team 5 from Police Station 7 (Pardo) manned by SPO2 Miguel Enriquez, PO1 Rodel Generoso, and PO1 Dennison Alcontin took the second place honors, while Team 2 from Police Station 2 (Fuente) bannered by PO2 Elmer Degoro, PO1 Edmond Rizarri, Eugene Empic and PO1 Fred Torrejos settled for third.

On the other hand, PO1 Edmond Rizarri (PS2), PO3 Mario Cartuciano (MPG) and PO1 Alexander Zapanta (HQS) were the gold medallists in Board 1, PO1 Rodel Generoso (PS7), PO3 Ronald Ybañez (PS11) and PO1 Dennison Alcontin (PS7) bagged silver medals in Board 2, while PSI Gualberto Oroc (PS4), SPO1 Neal Lavesarez (PS1) and SPO2 Marvin Insong (PS9) got bronze in Board 3.

PO2 Elmer Mosqueda (HQS) was the lone gold medallist among alternate players.

The top performing teams as well as the individual achievers will formally be honored in the awarding ceremony on September 29 in conjuction with the feast of St. Lorenzo Ruiz. The event starts 7 p.m. at the CCPO Headquarters. (FREEMAN)
