Team SanFran rules Red Durano Cup

CEBU, Philippines - The spirited hardcourt warriors from San Francisco, Camotes Island battered Carmen, 94-72, in their lopsided championship match to rule the 7th Cong. Red Durano Basketball Cup over the weekend at the Danao City Sports and Civic Center.

Kenny Rocacurva lived up to his lofty billing as SanFran's top gun on the way to claim the coveted MVP trophy. He is joined in the elite Mythical 5 by his teammates Jake Gonzales and Ravi John Herda and Team Carmen's Christian Phillip Bejoc and John Fitz Banzon.

The Christian Liaz-mentored SanFran cagers pocketed P50,000 for their feat while Carmen of coach Ronnie Mata took home P30,000. In the battle for third place, Danao of coach Edsel Vallena prevailed over Sogod, under the tutelage of Philippine de la Cerna.

A program of Congressman Ramon "Red" H. Durano VI, the six-week tournament was participated in by the city and all municipalities under the Fifth District of Cebu namely Danao City, Borbon, Carmen, Catmon, Compostela, Liloan, Pilar, Poro, San Francisco, Sogod and Tudela .

Durano said the development of youth is given top priority in his district because 'it is a crucial ingredient in the growth and progress of our communities'. Establishing a grassroots sports program is Durano's initiative to inculcate in the youth the values of self-discipline, camaraderie, and teamwork. (FREEMAN)
