Magis Eagles serve notice

Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Some good things never last.

That was the lesson of the day for the Don Bosco Greywolves and they learned it the hard way.

Coming off an all-time best 4-0 record, hopes were high for the Greywolves only to crumble in the end before a mighty opponent with vast championship experience.

Playing nearly flawless basketball for 40 minutes, three-time champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles literally pulverized the previously unbeaten Greywolves into smithereens, 73-48, in the 16th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Great team effort and nice execution of plays did it again for the Magis Eagles with all of their players except rookie guard Koko Tuadles hitting the scoring chart.

Eroll Pastor had 12 points and Andrew Velasco nailed 10 markers as the Magis Eagles earned a share of juniors division lead with their victims on identical 4-1 win-loss cards.

Jed Colonia and Emilio Lapiña connived for 17 points for the Magis Eagles who left the Greywolves groping for form after a lightning 27-9 attack in the first quarter.

The Greywolves were never in their true element and form the rest of the way, with the Magis Eagles kept on pounding them to close the first half with a commanding 26-point advantage,44-18.

The Magis Eagles virtually shut the lights out of the Greywolves with an insurmountable 37-point lead, 71-34, with only four minutes left to play.

Alje Mendez had 19 points and Ken Gato scored 11 for the Greywolves who crashed back to earth with a lot of things to ponder seeing their four-game win streak come to a sudden red stop in the bitterest of ways.

Action resumes today with another heavy quadrupleheader topbilled by the University of the Visayas Green Lancers, who will be gunning for their fifth straight victory against the defending titleholder University of San Carlos Warriors at 5:30 p.m. (FREEMAN)
