SWU, USJ-R rule CESAFI beach volley

CEBU, Philippines – Southwestern University and University of San Jose-Recoletos both had a double celebration after dominating their respective level in the beach volleyball event of the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) yesterday at the SWU’s sand courts.

SWU defended its women's division title in the collegiate division at the expense of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 21-17, 21-19.

The trio of Therese Rae Ramas, Florimae Rodriguez and Janelle Cabahug provided the spark for the Lady Cobras against USPF led veteran Rochelle Rica. Ramas eventually bagged the Most Valuable Player award while Rodriguez became the best attacker.

In the men's side, SWU composed of Rommel Pepito, Dave Cabaron and Jewel Cabahug finally got the title they long for after beating the University of the Visayas manned by Mark Fernandez and Joseph Noval , 21-,17, 21-17.

USJ-R ended with a double third place honors in the tertiary division after beating USPF, 21-13, 21-12 in the men's division and the University of San Carlos in the distaff side, 19-21, 22-20, 16-14.

Meanwhile in the boys' finals, USJ-R led by Abay Llenos prevented USC from stealing the show from them with a 21-17, 15-21, 15-7 victory. USJ-R also broke the hearts of the young USC girls under a decider, 11-21, 21-19, 15-10.

SWU settled for third place over USPF, 21-16, 23-21 in the girls’ side, but USPF got the boys' bronze over CIT-University, 21-5, 21-17. (FREEMAN)
