Firecracker makers told to shift to pyrotechnics

Christell Fatima M. Tudtud - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza has encouraged the firecracker manufacturers in Barangay Babag to switch to making pyrotechnics as she finds it more safe.

Radaza issued the call following several firecracker-related incidents in the past.

"Mao man akong gi-encourage kay duna man gyud makamao. But they find mas thrilling pa ang firecrackers kay the more nga kusog ang buto, mga pino-pino nga buto, kahibaw bitaw mo mao may naandan nila," Radaza said.

The use of firecrackers during the eves of Christmas and New Year has been a practice of the Filipinos. People using firecrackers believe that it can ward off evil and negative vibes.

Radaza said she already asked the barangay captain to help convince firecracker manufacturers to stop before another accident would happen.

"Niingon gyud ko nga dili na ta ana kay usahay ang dagan sa pabuto mopadung  ngadto's tawo. Delikado gyud kaayo," she said.

Babag Barangay Captain Epifania Augusto said she is also in favor of pyrotechnics than firecrackers. Augusto said she joined Radaza in encouraging firecracker manufacturers to stop and shift to pyrotechnics.

"Mas okay buhaton ang pyrotechnics kay safe," Augusto said.

Radaza, however, admitted that the city has no ordinance that banned the making of firecrackers as long as it has the required permits from the Philippine National Police.

The Department of Labor and Employment recently issued an order suspending the manufacture of firecrackers nationwide following a firecracker-related explosion in Bulacan.

Radaza said the city government will observe the directive.

"Natural kay mao man atong balaudnon. But atong tan-awon ang atong mga tawo kung unsay kapadulngan, unsay assistance nga atong mahatag," Radaza said. (FREEMAN)
