Santaruzan sa Sugbo 2017

CEBU, Philippines - This year’s “Santacruzan sa Sugbo” proved to be the grandest of the annual celebrations of Cebu’s devotion to the Virgin Mary and Cebuano artisanal craftsmanship and creativity.

Held on Sunday, May 28, within the SM Seaside City complex, this year’s observance of the event began with a mass at the Chapel of San Pedro Calungsod, followed by a traditional “Procession of Sagalàs” from the chapel to the Mountain Wing Atrium of the mall.

More than 30 “sagalàs” wearing ternos designed by couturiers affiliated with Clothes for Life Inc. took part in the procession and the “Presentation of Sagalàs” – headed by this year’s “Reina Emperatriz” Che Bernad and “Reina Elena” Maria Karla Bautista-Siao.

Like previous “Santacruzan sa Sugbo” celebrations, last Sunday’s event showcased a variety of translations and transliterations of the terno as envisioned by Cebu’s fashion designers. The ternos that bore neo-classical infusions, cross-culture inspirations and a contemporary mix of classic themes and motifs.

All in all, this year’s “Santacruzan sa Sugbo” – the second to be held in SM Seaside City – exquisitely exuded the qualities that put Cebuano designers in the rank of the fashion biggies of the world. (FREEMAN)
