• In 1899, Aristocratic Jazzman Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was born in Washington, D.C., the son of a White House butler. Called the "Duke" because he was "prideful," he got the opportunity to go back to the White House on his 70th birthday, after nearly 40 years of stardom. President Nixon decided to honor him with a party - and even played with "Happy Birthday" on a White House piano. "The Duke" kissed the president four times - "One," he said, "for each cheek."

• In 1962, President Kennedy paid tribute to a predecessor during a White House dinner for Nobel Prize winners. "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent," said JFK, "that has ever been gathered at the White House - with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone!"

• In 1897, Procopio Bonifacio, brother of Supremo Andres Bonifacio, testified that the forces of Emilio Aguinaldo's camp struck his nose with the butt-end of a gun, an act which surprised him since he said he did not offer resistance during the Katipuneros' abduction in Limbon, Cavite. Andres had earlier issued the Acta de Tejeros and the Naic Military Agreement that nullified the election and newfound authority of Aguinaldo's camp. Procopio's testimony is part of the kangaroo court martial proceedings conducted by the camp of Aguinaldo led by Brig. Gen. Mariano Noriel against the Supremo. The Bonifacio brothers were shot at, with Ciriaco Bonifacio dying on the spot, Andres being hit in the arm and stabbed in the throat and Procopio being tightly bound.
