Next Philippine leaders should prioritize tourism, infra
CEBU, Philippines - Whether the new government leadership will appoint a new tourism secretary or not, stakeholders are only demanding one thing, and that is for the government to prioritize the tourism sector and fix the country’s infrastructure.
"Tourism Secretary should lead in developing infrastructure with Department of Transportation and Communication [DOTC], Department of Public Works and Highways [DPWH]," said Network of Independent Travel Agencies (NITAS) chairman Robert Lim Joseph.
However, Joseph said that it would be better if the new set of government leaders will appoint a new tourism secretary.
Likewise, Cebu Association of Tour Operators (CATO) president Edilberto Mendoza said that what the tourism players would like the new governemnt to address is "our infrastructure and transportation. We need to upgrade and level up to meet international standards."
According to Mendoza, the tourism sector is again facing another level of uncertainty, with the upcoming change of government leadership.
"We really do not know what lies ahead. Whether or not the tourism industry will be given priority," Mendoza said.
Prioritizing the infrastructure and put focus on crafting programs that could boost the tourism sector, are few of the important demands that should be given utmost attention.
Joseph said, should the new set of government officials will appoint new tourism secretary, it is imperative that, the new tourism chief will be able to connect immediately with the stakeholders in the industry.
Improving the tourism law to eliminate loopholes and amend relevant and sustainable administrative and marketing strategies as well as come up with a six-year plan for coordinated marketing efforts for the hotels and carriers.
"Review the outcome of grants handled, review the Madrid Fusion investments and the MICE Programs," Joseph suggested. (FREEMAN)
