MANILA, Philippines — Classes in some areas affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8 have been allowed to resume, according to the Department of Education.

Citing the Learning Continuity in Emergencies Framework, DepEd said that schools in Cotabato, Kidapawan, Koronadal, Tacurong and Sultan Kudarat may resume learning activities.

The agency said that safety inspection would continue in affected schools, while learners, teachers and workers  will be provided with mental and psychosocial support services.

DepEd said that classes in General Santos City and Sarangani remain suspended until further notice.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said it is important to ensure that schools are safe, and learners and teachers are ready before resuming classes.

As of June 16, DepEd said at least 42,821 learners, 7,406 personnel and 39 schools division offices were displaced by the temblor.

Classes in 2,342 schools remain suspended while 6,748 others have resumed learning activities.

Angara said that class resumption must be gradual and based on actual conditions on the ground.

In General Santos City, 115 of 119 schools have been inspected as of June 15, with 76 cleared for occupancy.

DepEd has allocated P352.3 million for clean-up and clearing operations as well as for minor repairs in schools.
