Gun ban violators hit 2,015

MANILA, Philippines — Police have arrested 2,015 people nationwide for violation of the election gun ban.

The Philippine National Police reported yesterday that 1,935 of the violators are civilians, 37 security guards, 14 PNP members and nine military personnel. Twenty others were not identified.

A total of 1,559 firearms, 654 bladed weapons, 82 explosives and 8,629 bullets were confiscated in 1,921 law enforcement operations across the country.

PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo urged gun owners not to bring their firearms outside their residence unless they have a valid certificate of authority to carry or transport the guns.

“Kayo ay malalagay sa alanganin at makukumpiska ang baril ninyo at masasampahan kayo ng kaso for violation of the gun ban, which is considered an election offense,” Fajardo said.

The gun ban, which was implemented on Jan. 9, will be in effect until the end of the election period on June 8.

Violators face charges for illegal possession of firearms in accordance with Commission on Elections Resolution 10741.

The resolution mandates the setting up of checkpoints as well as prohibits bearing, carrying and transporting of firearms and other deadly weapons.

Violators also face disqualification from holding public office, deprivation of the right to vote and cancellation of or perpetual disqualification from securing a gun license.
