CEBU, Philippines - Lapu-Lapu City is fielding in 368 student-athletes to this year’s Central Visayas Regional Athletics Association (CVRAA), which will open Sunday in the City of Naga.

Nona Booc, education program supervisor at the Department of Education in Lapu-Lapu City, said involving the students in sports like CVRAA is part of the agency’s goal of promoting the growth of children, aside from enhancing their academic capabilities.

Booc said the students, most of whom come from public schools and a few from private schools, started training since January 4.

“Athletes for the indoor games such as table tennis and chess are currently training in Hoopsdome (in Barangay Gun-ob). Basketball players are practicing at the Mactan Air Base Elementary School and volleyball players in the gyms of Barangay Basak and Pajo,” Booc said.

Other indoor games that will be contested by the students are taekwondo, arnis, gymnastics and athletics.

Booc said the city government gave a budget of P2 million for the delegation’s food and transportation while a budget of P1.2 million had been allocated for their uniforms.

“We will be leaving on February 4. We will meet in Hoopsdome after our send-off program,” Booc said.

Last November, more than 40 athletes from the city were also sent to the Philippine National Games-Visayas Leg in Antique province led by Norvin Imbong, head of the City Sports Commission. — (FREEMAN)
