UC, Unit 1 rule City Olympics
The University of Cebu celebrate after winning the overall championship in the secondary division of the 29th Cebu City Olympics yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

CEBU, Philippines — The University of Cebu and Unit 1 emerged as champions in their respective divisions yesterday at the conclusion of the 29th Cebu City Olympics at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The powerhouse UC Webmasters snatched an unassailable 78 golds, 66 silvers and 50 bronzes to dominate the secondary division.

Abellana National School and University of San Carlos occupied the second and third spots, respectively. ANS, which represented Unit IX, garnered 36 golds, 18 silvers and 20 bronzes, while USC collected 35 gold, 45 silver and 29 bronze medals.

UC athletes made a final push yesterday with golds coming from taekwondo and karate.

The gold medalist for UC in taekwondo were bantamweight Roydan Ranile, featherweight Christine Villasor, lightweight Martha dela Victoria, openweight Sophia Alexandra Labra and welterweight Job Caneda while its karatekas got five gilts through the efforts of Precious Belicario in kata and kumite along with Liz Salon and Christine Tautho.

UC’s arnisadors also delivered as their secondary boys team anyo, solo double baston and labanan events showcased their stuffs well. The gold medalists were  lightweight Danielle Baculi, pinweight Jasmin Ylaya, bantamweights Daniella Lacao and Denz Aaron Mayol and extra lightweight Justin Caneda.

The Webmasters also prevailed in the secondary boys volleyball after beating University of San Jose-Recoletos, 25-23,25-15,11-25,25-18.

USJ-R bounced back through its girls squad after upending USC, 25-21,25-17,23-25, 25-16.

Unit 2, for its part, swept the boys and girls volleyball titles.

In the elementary action, Unit VI ended the multi-sporting event on top of the heap with 31 golds, 32 silvers and 31 bronzes thanks to its pencak silat artists.

UC settled for second place with 20-10-4 gold-silver-bronze medals, while Unit VII claimed the third spot with 19-12-15 medals.
