CEBU, Philippines —  The Cebu City’s public library is set to return to its pre-pandemic 24-hour operations as incoming Mayor Nestor Archival announced its reopening after he will officially take his new post.

"Inig sud nako, inig ka gabie, open na atong public library 24 hours," said Archival, reaffirming his commitment to accessible education.

The Cebu City Public Information Office (PIO) reported that Archival aims to reopen the library at night starting July 2.

Personnel assignments and scheduling adjustments, however, are still under review, the report said.

Archival emphasized the importance of learning spaces, describing the library as a hub for growth, reflection, and dreams.

“Ato gyud ng gipanghingusgan karon, para sa atong mga kabatan-unan, ug para sa mga tawo nga gusto mo avail sa public library…To every dreamer, learning, ready, and seeker, this one is for you,” he added.

Archival said he also coordinated with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to ensure a reliable internet connection to further enhance the library's resources.

“Nakig-coordinate na ta sa DICT kung how fast they can put the system. Kung wala, that’s one thing nga ato gyu'ng himuon nga ato lang e-open (library). But we want gyud na ana nga time, naa na tay internet,” Archival said.

To ensure safety, Archival assured that police personnel will be stationed in the area to protect the library users.

The 24/7 library initiative was first launched in March 2018 under former mayor and now Vice Mayor Tomas Osmeña, following a student’s request on social media for a late-night study space.

However, the service was halted during the COVID-19 pandemic and has not resumed its round-the-clock operations until now. (CEBU NEWS)
