DOH-7 on code white alert for May 12 polls
CEBU, Philippines — The Department of Health - Central Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH-CVCHD) has declared a Code White Alert from May 9 to 13, 2025, in anticipation of the upcoming national and local elections.
Through Regional Circular No. 2025-0046, former regional director Dr. Jaime S. Bernadas directed all local health officers, provincial DOH officers, hospital chiefs, and relevant personnel to implement preparedness measures during the election period.
As part of the agency’s Integrated Code Alert System, the Code White Alert ensures a timely and effective response to potential health emergencies during this significant national event.
Under the alert, all health facilities are required to mobilize emergency medical teams, prepare logistics and communication systems, and designate personnel for rapid deployment in case of untoward incidents.
The circular also instructs Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Managers and designated focal personnel to conduct continuous monitoring, provide rapid health assessments, and carry out necessary health emergency response activities throughout the alert period.
In line with election-related precautions, the public is also urged to safeguard their health as temperatures rise across the region.
DOH-CVCHD advised everyone to “avoid being outside, between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM when the sun’s heat is at its peak.”
To prevent heatstroke and dehydration, individuals are encouraged to stay hydrated by bringing water tumblers. Those going outdoors are advised to wear light, loose-fitting clothing and carry an umbrella, fan, or hat.
According to the health department, “prolonged exposure to extreme heat can cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, digestive issues, infections, asthma attacks, and other health complications.”
To manage heat-related illnesses, affected individuals should be moved to cooler areas. Recommended cooling measures include applying ice packs to critical areas, removing excess clothing, and using fans or misting devices to aid evaporative cooling. (CEBU NEWS)
