CEBU, Philippines — In a sport best known for the boys, Cebuano shotmaker Rubilen Amit carved her own niche as one of the Philippines' most prolific cue artists.

Amit wrote her name in Philippine history books as the first Filipina woman to become a world champion in billiards. She achieved the feat not just once, but twice.

The pride of Mandaue City first shot to fame when she topped the 2009 World Pool Association (WPA) Women's World 10-Ball Championship. Four years later, she did it again to further cement her status as the world's billiards queen.

The 37-year-old Amit, who started entering billiard halls at the age of 12 upon the guidance of her father, also made valuable contributions while donning the Phl colors.

As a member of the national team, Amit produced a total of six gold medals for the Philippines in women's singles 8-Ball and 9-Ball events of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2005 (Manila), 2007 (Thailand), 2009 (Laos) and 2013 (Myanmar).

For his great achievements, Amit was once recognized as Athlete of the Year both by the Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC) and the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA). — EBV (FREEMAN)
