Dumpit remains a cop

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Controversial policeman Adonis Dumpit will be back as member of Cebu City Police Office after his expected release from jail today.

CCPO director Senior Superintendent Benjamin Santos Jr. said Dumpit is still a police officer because he was cleared of the administrative case filed against him.

"He is still a policeman," Santos said.

Santos said Dumpit will have the option to return to his previous unit at CCPO or stay with Mayor-elect Tomas Osmeña as security aide.

"Dumpit was cleared of administrative case but in criminal case it is still pending. Ang tawag naming sa mga police na nakakulong they were in indefinite leave without pay," Santos told The FREEMAN over the phone.

Santos said the Regional Personnel and Human Resources Development Division (RPHRDD) of the Police Regional Office-7 can issue an order for the activation of Dumpit in public service.

Dumpit was charged for killing an alleged notorious robber, Ronron Go, in 2004 at Sitio Sampaguita, Villagonzalo II Barangay Tejero, Cebu City.

He was convicted by the Regional Trial Court in August 2014 for homicide. The conviction was appealed before the Court of Appeals where he also asked for his temporary liberty.

The appellate court granted his petition for bail last week. Osmeña said he will shoulder the P250,000 bail of Dumpit.

"Sukad masukad andam ko motabang ni Dumpit like sa iyang abogado," Osmeña said, saying he will have Dumpit as one of his aides.

In the meantime, Osmeña said he will get a hotel room for Dumpit to allow him to relax considering that he had been in jail for six years.

"Akong himoon siya og assistant, dili lang bodyguard kay dili man siya armado," he said.

"In the meantime, he can stick around with me so that he will be sheltered from people like you (media)," Osmeña added, in jest.

Osmeña vowed to wipe out illegal drugs and apprehend drug lords in the city when he assumes office on July 1.

Asked what would be Dumpit's role in his campaign against illegal drugs, Osmeña just laughed and said "dili lang ko mosaba oy."

The incoming mayor, however, said that Dumpit is a dedicated professional who hates criminals. — (FREEMAN)
