Man killed, girl, 8 hurt in shooting

CEBU, Philippines - A man died while an eight-year-old girl was injured in a shooting incident in Barangay Liong, Dumanjug town on Wednesday.

Marky Tecson, 34, of Barangay Looc, died immediately after he was shot several times by two unidentified men.

Niña Bollado, of Barangay Camboang, was hit in her arm by a stray bullet and was brought to a hospital in Cebu City for further treatment.

Investigation showed that the incident happened while Tecson was fetching his daughter from Dumanjug Central Elementary School past 5 p.m.

Tecson was placing his daughter’s bag on the motorcycle and was about to head home with his daughter when two men wearing bonnets and riding on another motorcycle arrived.

The unidentified assailants then repeatedly shot Tecson. Wounded, the victim managed to run some 10 meters away, but he eventually slumped to the ground.

One of the assailants followed Tecson and shot him more.

After making sure the victim was already dead, the assailant then took the victim’s motorcycle and with his cohort, sped off towards the town of Ronda.

The victim’s daughter, who witnessed the incident, ran and hid at a nearby store and told the attendants that her father was shot.

Other parents in the area who were also fetching their children took cover when shots were fired.

Unfortunately, a stray bullet hit Bollado, who was standing inside the school some 20 meters away from the crime scene.

The victim already succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds by the time policemen arrived in the area.

He was declared dead on arrival at Barili District Hospital.

Police officers recovered three empty shells of a cal. 45 pistol near the victim’s body and a slug near his head. Ten more empty shells of the same firearm were found.

The police also found a cal. 9mm loaded with 13 live rounds tucked on the victim’s waistline.

Police Officer 3 Dionesio Tagopa, the case investigator, said they are trying to determine the background of the victim in order to identify the assailants and the motive of the killing.

Tagopa further said they will request a copy of footages from closed-circuit television cameras installed in nearby establishments, which might have captured the incident. (FREEMAN)
