Is marriage extortion the new or old normal? A, by far, well-kept Chinese tradition, marrying into wealth is a way to keep and improve wealth within the family. In olden times this was the origin of arranged marriages by and between royals, elites, and even warring tribes or clans of feudal societies. To this day, it thrives!

But nowadays it is like a millennial dream of any misty-eyed aspiring bride or groom ready to assert no pre-nuptial agreement in the name or guise of true or false love!

• A taipan proposes to another to help him in his country franchise with fleet purchases to cover the franchise’s annual quota.  The other taipan agrees on the condition that they match the marriage of his youngest daughter to the son of the franchisee. Done! A titanic couple and deal is now a going concern. 

• An ailing taipan seeks get-back from a rogue taipan friend to save his family corporation from a hostile raid by cousin.  Rogue taipan agrees provided they match his daughter and the ailing dad’s son in marriage.  Family corporation survived raid for decades.

• Bright young entrepreneur is swooned by a rich man’s son. They marry without prenuptial agreement. Husband takes all of wife’s savings. Controls her financially and slave-drives her to create wealthy firms for him, not for her, with all the legal checks versus conjugal sharing!  Wife now lives in quiet desperation.

• Scion of rich family marries richer girl. Girl remains breadwinner sans normal love. Husband catches wife in you-know-what! Wife still figuring whether to dispose of the husband or not, for fear of passion killing as cautioned by a shrink!

Many happy or sad marriages result from open-money-minded matchups!

• A CEO wife even abhors husband’s demand to have voucher-based home expense budgeting as in liquidation for house-marketing expenses, and trip tickets for car use!

So there, feng shui first before marrying into wealth: for compatibility, materially and pragmatically!

After all, it is the value of marriage that counts not the price tags hash-tagged by ill-getting motives of let alone, not even true wealth by any definitions!
