Kathryn Bernardo nabs her first movie acting award

Kathryn Bernardo crushed the grand slam dream of Nadine Lustre when she won the Movie Actress of the Year from the 35th PMPC Star Awards given by the Philippine Movie Press Club.

Kathryn won for her role in the blockbuster movie “The Hows of Us” which paired her with real-life sweetheart Daniel Padilla (who was likewise nominated as Movie Actor of the Year for the same film). This is her first acting award in a movie.

Nadine, on the other hand, was nominated for “Never Not Love You” for which she won the nods from Young Critics Circle and FAMAS as Best Actress. She failed to earn the nod from the Star Awards, thus saying goodbye to the possibility of a grand slam.

Aside from winning Movie Actress of the Year, Kath, together with Daniel also won Loveteam of The Year.

Also winning the Movie Actress of the Year plum is Pop Star Princess Sarah Geronimo for her performance in the movie “Miss Granny.” PMPC named Sarah and Kathryn as co-winners.

Singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid scored an upset when he was voted Movie Actor of The Year for the Cinemalaya film “Kuya Wes,” as he beat veteran actor Eddie Garcia for the plum award.

The Movie Supporting Actress of the Year trophy was won by Cherie Gil for “Citizen Jake” while Arjo Atayde was named Movie Supporting Actor of the Year for his role as the drug lord in “Buy Bust.”

Emerging the big winner at the Star Awards was “Rainbow’s Sunset” from Heaven’s Best Entertainment. It won awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Joel Lamangan), Best Screenplay (Eric Ramos), Best Ensemble Acting and Best Theme Song.

Named New Movie Actors of the Year were Danzel Fernandez for “Otlum” at Ryle Santiago for “Bakwit Boys.”

New Movie Actress of the Year is GMA artist Sanya Lopez for the movie “Wet and Wild.”

Winning the Movie Child Performer of The Year is Kenken Nuyad for the Cinemalaya film “Liway.”

The other winners are Pong Ignacio (Movie Cinematographer of the Year – “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral”), Roy Lachica (Movie Production Designer of the Year – “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral”), Jay Halili (Movie Editor of the Year – “Buy Bust”), Len Calvo (Movie Musical Scorer of the Year – “Miss Granny”), Steve Vesagas and Whannie Dellosa (Movie Sound Engineer of the Year – “Buy Bust”), “Rainbow’s Sunset” (Movie Ensemble Acting of The Year), “Sa ‘Yo Na” (Movie Theme Song of the Year – “Rainbow’s Sunset”).

The PMPC gives a different set of awards for indie movies and they are: Mike De Leon, Atom Araullo and Noel Pascual (Indie Movie Screenwriter of the Year – “Citizen Jake”), Neil Daza (Indie Movie Cinematographer of the Year – “Kung Paano Hinihintay Ang Dapithapon”) Ana Lou Sanchez (Indie Movie Production Designer of the Year – “Hintayan Ng Langit”), Gerone Centeno and Tim Estera III (Indie Movie Editor of the Year –“Citizen Jake”),Paulo Protacio (Indie Movie Musical Score of the Year –“Bakwit Boys”), Lamberto Casas, Albert Michael Idioma and Aian Caro (Movie Sound Engineer of the Year – “ML”), “Citizen Jake” (Indie Movie Ensemble Acting of the Year), “Hapi Ang Buhay” (Indie Movie Theme Song of the Year – “Hapi Ang Buhay”).

The PMPC also gave an award for Short Movie of the Year won by “Talulot” (EAB Productions) and “10 Seconds” (Sonza Entertainment Productions).

The winner of the Best Director for the Short Movie is Joey Austria of “Talulot.”

The PMPC also has a number of Special Awards and the winners are Daniel Fernando (Darling of the Press), Dante Rivero (Nora Aunor Ulirang Artista Lifetime Award), and Laurice Guillen (Ulirang Artista sa Likod ng Kamera Lifetime).

Named Mga Natatanging Bituin ng Siglo were Nora Aunor, Tirso Cruz, Christopher de Leon, Joseph Estrada, Eddie Garcia, Anita Linda, Niño Muhlach, Ramon Revilla, Sr., Susan Roces, Gloria Romero, Philip Salvador and Vilma Santos.

Honored as Outstanding Pillars of PMPC were its past presidents namely Ethel Ramos, Ronald Constantino, Veronica Samio, and Letty Celi.

The 35th PMPC Star Awards for Movies will be aired on June 16 on ABS-CBN’s Sunday’s Best.
