MEZ-1 to lead ecozone transformation program

CEBU, Philippines — The Mactan Export Zone (MEZ-1) will take the lead in the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) transformation program of developing ecozones into integrated townships.

PEZA director general Charito Plaza announced that the state-owned MEZ-1 will lead the facelift of the four government-owned economic zones to make them integrated and modern, where live, work and play concept applies.

MEZ-1 for instance, which has been there since 1986, has to be improved in terms of concept, landscaping, said Plaza in an interview Wednesday.

“We are now changing the face of economic zones. We will introduce new concept that will integrate industrial, commercial and residential components,” said Plaza.

MEZ-1, a 120-hectare industrial zone has started this transformation program of PEZA with the building of 7,500 square meters integrated development called “Mahi” by AppleOne Properties, Inc. (API).

Plaza also urged other developers to collaborate with PEZA to propose for other possible projects within the remaining lots of the zone for a possible residential projects or condominium.

She mentioned that the 68 thousand people working inside the zone are the captured market for residential condominium developments.

“We are tapping consultants and urban planners, those who can help us transform the zones to make it green and modern,” added Plaza.
